Bunion Surgery

Bunions can often be managed with conservative care, especially when caught early enough. This means treating pain with over-the-counter painkillers and icing, wearing properly fitted and supportive shoes, and applying protective padding to the bunion before putting on shoes.

However, when you’ve taken all measures possible and you’re either still in pain or having trouble going about your daily activities due to your bunion, then it’s time to see Pivotal Foot And Ankle Surgeons for a more effective treatment plan.

Our goal is to find the right treatment options to effectively manage your bunion pain while preventing the need for surgery; however, in some cases, surgery may be the best choice.

You may need to consider bunion surgery (a bunionectomy) if:

  • Your bunion is large enough that the big toe crosses over the smaller toes
  • You deal with chronic inflammation and pain that isn’t responding to nonsurgical options
  • Your pain makes it difficult to get through your daily routine or even move

You’ll be able to go home immediately after surgery. Of course, we know that pain management is a top priority. We will discuss pain management with you and provide a prescription pain reliever that you can take to ease pain and discomfort for the first couple of days after surgery.

If you undergo endoscopic surgery, you’ll find that the pain subsides within 48 hours. You will need to stay off your foot entirely. You’ll come into our office in about two weeks to ensure everything is healing correctly. From there, we will upgrade you to a protective boot. It usually takes about 12 weeks for the bone to heal and about 3-4 months to fully recover (which means you can return to all your everyday activities, including athletic activities).

If bunion pain impacts your quality of life, our team at Pivotal Foot And Ankle Surgeons can help you decide if it’s time for surgery.
